Denver Trip

Travel Proposal: Denver, Colorado

Architecture 401 [civic architectural studio]

Instructors: Tim B. Castillo, Jorge Colón, Roger Schluntz,Jode Nyboer Lawrence, Cory Greenfield

The intent of this trip would be to introduce the fourth year architectural students to an emerging urban transportation system in Denver, Colorado.  The studio would have to the opportunity to tour several stations, including bus and light rail facilities located in the downtown corridor. Over the last twenty years, Denver has seen tremendous urban densification throughout the metropolitan region.  In particular, the suburban growth has had an impact on the I-25 corridor and the city continues to respond by creating a more efficient transit systems.  In 2008, T-Rex (Transportation Expansion Project) was completed; a new light rail line south of the city. The public has embraced this system and continues to see increased ridership.  We feel this is an excellent precedent for the students to be exposed to and influence their understanding of emerging transportations systems.

In addition to exposure to the transit systems, we are working with several faculty at the University of Colorado to facilitate a series of lectures.  These lectures will focus on emergent trends in the urban fabric and give a broader contextual understanding of the development of the Denver metropolitan region.

We will also be visiting with key planners and architects practicing in the city, these visits will be determined as we get closer to the travel date
